During this program, attorney Christine Matus will describe guardianship - the legal process which enables caregivers to make life-altering decisions for their disabled child after the age of 18.
When a child turns 18, they assume legal independence. No longer are their parents or caregivers responsible for making decisions regarding their finances, education, living arrangements, or medical treatment. This is the case regardless of whether the individual has a disability that may affect their capacity to make such decisions.
During this program, attorney Christine Matus will describe the establishment of guardianship – the legal process through which parents or caregivers obtain the right to make life-altering decisions for their disabled child after the age of 18. Christine will discuss the times in which obtaining guardianship is appropriate, the steps required to do so, and alternatives that may be considered.
