New Jersey's Wild Past: Fossils, Climate, and Living Treasures. Step into deep time and uncover the incredible natural history beneath your feet.

New Jersey’s wildlife tells a story that stretches back over one billion years. In this fascinating program for adults, explore how dramatic shifts in terrain, sea level, and climate shaped the state’s remarkable biodiversity — from ancient marine life preserved in stone to today’s endangered and threatened species.

Examine real fossils from different geologic eras and discover how scientists use them to understand our region’s prehistoric environments. Learn how glaciers, inland seas, and changing coastlines transformed the landscape and influenced the plants and animals that call New Jersey home.

Then roll up your sleeves and sort through 15-million-year-old sediments to uncover fossils of your own — and take home your finds as a piece of the Garden State’s ancient past.
