October is cranberry time in the Pine Barrens. Learn about how the industry once existed in Ocean County at the former company town of Double Trouble Village in Bayville, NJ.
It's cranberry time in the Pine Barrens and every fall this valuable fruit is harvested throughout southern New Jersey. Ocean County once had as many as 260 cranberry bogs but with a change in the industry, culture, and landscape, the numbers slowly dwindled over the decades. Join us as we witness the evolution of the cranberry bogs at the uniquely named former company town of Double Trouble Village. Andrew Anderson, a Resource Interpretive Specialist at Double Trouble State Park, will share dramatic slides of the labor-intensive dry picking of fruit and the modern water harvest still used at cranberry farms today. These pictures will show one of the last major cranberry harvests in Ocean County.
