Autumn is full of baseball tales, like the first modern World’s Series, as it was called, full of talk of players betting openly on the games and labor issues with the owners. The fall also brought the biggest base-running in the sport’s history and the first of what is now hundreds of Dominican ballplayers. Learn more about these stories and others from Phil Coffin, the author of “A Baseball Book of Days: Thirty-One Moments That Transformed the Game.”
Phil Coffin, a longtime New York Times editor who lives in Point Pleasant Beach, is the author of two books of unconventional baseball history: “A Baseball Book of Days: Thirty-One Moments That Transformed the Game” and “When Baseball Was Still Topps: Portraits of the Game in 1959, Card by Card.” He has been a member of the Society for American Baseball Research since 1994.
