Join R. Joseph Latshaw to learn about the historic Old Methodist Cemetery, located in downtown Toms River. This program will cover a brief history of early 19th century Toms River and the emergence of Methodism. Latshaw will discuss the meaning behind some of the symbols you see on the gravestones, the identity of veterans who are buried there, preservation efforts, and much more.
R. Joseph Latshaw III, an Eagle Scout, is a lifelong resident of Toms River. He graduated Toms River High School South in 2020 and recently graduated from Ocean County College and Kean University with a bachelors in history. He is employed by the Ocean County Cultural & Heritage Commission working on a variety of projects and serving as a docent at the Cedar Bridge Tavern County Historic Site. Additionally he is a: Trustee, at the Ocean County Historical Society, Chair of the Toms River Township Historic Preservation Commission, an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 20 VFW #6063, Trustee for the Southern Region, League of Historical Societies of New Jersey and Church Historian, First United Methodist Church of Toms River. He is also an active member of the North American Vexillological Association and Col. Somers Chapter of the New Jersey Society, Sons of the American Revolution.
