Explore the fascinating history of this much-loved beverage! Tea was introduced to England in the 17th century. At first, it was sold in London's early coffee houses for medicinal purposes. Only after Catherine of Braganza of Portugal married England's Charles II did tea become a social beverage. As early as 1840, Anna the 7th Duchess of Bedford invented the custom of afternoon tea, which Queen Victoria adopted as her own.
