Chatzkel lived through the Russian Revolution, two world wars, the Holocaust, a communist regime and the transition of his native Lithuania from a Soviet republic to an independent state. As a linguist and lexicographer, his dictionaries helped preserve the Lithuanian language during the Soviet era. In 2000, at the age of 93, to the end of his life he displayed the strength of a survivor, insight of an intellectual, and humor of a wise man.
