Our Prompt for August is to write about a poem about a "Road Trip" (real or fictional).
Here's a wee bit of inspiration:
The Roads Taken
by Barbara Kynett
The winds blew, prodigiously, out of K.C.,
and leaving behind the blufflands,
the overgrown ruts of westering wagons,
the last of the long grass,
somewhere past the Leavenworth turn
they blew on the tail of the Plymouth coupe
till it flew like a prairie bird,
earthbound, but seeming to skim
the cambered stretches of macadam,
the empty length of open highway.
Ballast was light. In back, tools,
a can of gas,
a briefcase of order forms,
some GE tracts,
a salesman's bible of pitches,
and one change of clothes
in a brown valise.
Straight out of Canada,
pitching at the Rockies,
they blew the whirring Plymouth and him,
with a hint in them, like fate,
of something darker than the end
of an Autumn day.
Riding and pushing his rear,
racing the Santa Fe past Ellsworth, past Bunker Hill,
into that one prairie town—
a homing pigeon,
beak marked by countless mason jars,
smelling camaraderie
and the sweet absolution of bootleg Scotch—
toward the coming lights
